Daily Reading: Romans 13:8-14
Yesterday we reflected on the need to be focused and faithful – focused on bringing delight to our Lord by being faithful to the tasks to which He has called us. Those tasks are many and varied but they are summed up with great clarity in today’s reading:
9 The commandments … are summed up in this one command: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
This is unavoidably clear. We bring delight to the Lord by living lives of faithful obedience to Him and to His highest purpose for our actual day-to-day lives. That purpose is to live lives of love towards those around us. Stated another way, it is to seek the highest best of others in every situation. This is the key command of the Lord by which He will judge our faithfulness (or otherwise) when he returns. And that return is nearer today than it was yesterday (v.11)
Today’s passage really speaks to our need to stay focused, by bringing into very clear focus the central, real-life objective we are called to pursue – Love! It warns us not to slip into a self-centred focus on our own desires or ambitions, but to put on the uniform of Christlikeness. That uniform is love. And today is the the day to put it on!
Holy Spirit, help me to clothe myself with the Lord Jesus today by living a life of love. And when He returns, may I be caught being faithful to His calling. Amen.
