Jesus is coming today … repent!

In this second week of Advent, John the Baptist calls out his timeless message that to be ready for the coming of the Lord – either physically at the End of the Age or spiritually today – we must live in repentance.

Daily Reading: Matthew 3:1-12

2 …‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’

Repentance is essentially a matter of turning around … of changing direction.

In practice, repentance most often applies to a change of behaviour. Someone who was behaving in a particular way changes their mind and starts to behave in a new way that is the direct opposite.

Repentance can also imply a change of focus. Someone whose life was focused entirely on herself changes her mind and begins to focus on God and others instead.

I invite you today to consider repentance from an uncommon angle. Most often, when we think of repentance, we focus on what we are turning away from – whether some sin or some wrong focus. But as this week unfolds, how about focusing instead on what – or rather WHOM – we are called to repent towards. The Kingdom of God has come near in Jesus. So let’s repent towards Jesus!

Take some time now to worship Jesus for the beauty and wonder of Who He is. Fill your mind and heart with truth about Him. How about choosing just three of your favourite qualities of Jesus. List them. Then, meditate on how you see those qualities revealed in your own personal experience of Jesus. And let’s repent towards Jesus today.

Holy Spirit, help me to see Jesus everywhere I go today. Fill my heart with love for Him and my mind with thoughts of Him. Amen.
