Here in South Africa it’s a Public Holiday in honour of Woman’s Day (which was yesterday); hence there is no reading for today on our Annual Bible Reading Plan.

So for a little extra dose of the Word, and also as a focus for intercession today, here’s a repost of a prayer from 2025’s “Praying the Psalms” series. I invite you to read Psalm 72 prayerfully and then join in the prayer below. The post was first published on 6 May 2025, here.

Psalm 72

King of kings and Lord of lords,
Ruler of heaven and earth,
I bow in prayer for the rulers of this world,
for kings and queens,
presidents and prime ministers,
and for all under their leadership,
who govern the nations of the earth:

Teach them Your ways of justice and righteousness
so that they may govern
for Your glory
and for their people’s good.

Inspire, guide, and empower them
to protect the oppressed,
to care for those in need,
and to overcome the power
of cruel and violent oppressors.

Fill their hearts with compassion
for those who are weak, poor, neglected
and in desperate need.
Cause them to value each person
over whom they govern
as precious and honoured in Your sight.

Grant them such insight, wisdom and discernment
that, under their reign,
everyone’s lives will become
more fruitful, productive and prosperous.

May the godliness and wisdom of their leadership
cause people to reach out to You
in gratitude and worship,
hungry for You
and for Your gracious blessing.

I praise You Lord,
You alone,
for the wonders You do!
May Your glory cover the earth
and Your Name be honoured and praised
in every nation under the sun.
