Common Sense

Daily Readings: Psalm 38 and Proverbs 2:1-11

Proverbs 2 assures us of God’s deep desire to share His wisdom with us. The passage promises that when we listen to the voice of God, tune our ears carefully to the sound of His voice and make a concentrated effort to hear Him, God will graciously speak His wisdom to us. I love the way v.7 phrases this promise: “He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.”

By definition, “common sense” is the sort of sound and prudent judgment (“sense”) that is available to everyone (“common”). In truth its never been very “common” because so many times we ignore its voice. However, if we will prioritise honesty and integrity, and seek to live with fairness to others and with faithfulness to God, then the LORD promises to shield us, guard us and protect us through providing us with the understanding of how to do so. He will lead us through His wisdom.

In Verses 9-11 God promises that, when we desire wisdom because we long to live a life pleasing to Him:

  • We will understand what is right, just, and fair,
  • We will find the right way to go,
  • Wisdom will enter our hearts,
  • Knowledge will fill us with joy,
  • Wise choices will watch over us, and
  • Understanding will keep us safe.

God of all wisdom, please guide me with Your wisdom today; give me Your gift of the ability to make sound judgments; and grant me the courage to follow what I come to discern is pleasing to You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
