Wisdom speaks

Daily Readings: Psalm 37 and Proverbs 1:8-33

On Friday we considered the thought that to live in the “fear of the Lord” is to live with such a reverent and loving sense of awe and wonder at the glory, greatness, holiness and perfection of God that the overriding desire of one’s life is to please God in everything one does. This attitude, we discovered, is the fountain of Godly wisdom. And this Godly wisdom in turn enables us to discern in each situation what course of action will please God.

Today’s passage from Proverbs 1 personifies God’s Wisdom. It reassures us that when a God-pleasing life is our true desire, God’s wisdom “shouts” and “cries” and “calls” and “reaches out” to us. Godly wisdom is not elusive. In fact, the ability to hear the voice of wisdom has been hard-wired into the human mind in what we commonly call “the conscience”, or the “still, small voice of reason” inside our heads. Through this voice of our conscience, God’s wisdom offers us the “counsel”, “advice” and “correction” which will direct our lives away from “disaster”, “calamity”, “anguish and distress” and towards living in “peace, untroubled by fear of harm.” If only we will listen, Wisdom says, “I’ll share my heart with you and make you wise.” (v.23)

Today, let us seek to be attentive to the voice of Godly Wisdom as it cries out to us. Do not ignore that voice in your head, that whisper of your conscience that warns you to stop, to turn around, or even to run for your life. Do not ignore the positive promptings of the voice of Wisdom, to speak or act in particular ways. Our trouble is not being unable to hear the voice of wisdom. Our trouble is how accustomed we have become to ignoring its voice.

Lord, make me attentive to the voice of Your Wisdom, as it guides me into Your path for my life. Amen.
