Daily Reading: Hebrews 10:19-22
Did you notice that those four verses are a single sentence? It’s as though the author of Hebrews was so excited and overwhelmed by the revelation of God’s invitation that it all came spilling out in breathless wonder.
At its very heart, this long sentence is an invitation to “Draw near to God” (v.22). Everything else in that sentence explains the details of the invitation, motivates the recipient of the invitation to respond, and answers the question, ’How on earth could it be possible for me to be found worthy of this invitation?’ But the heart of the invitation is: “Draw near to God”.
The author’s preemptive answer to the question of worthiness is this: Our sins no longer have the power to separate us from the presence of God because Jesus has laid down His body for us on the Cross and has thereby torn open the curtain that separated us from God’s personal presence (v.20). Having repented of our sins we have received the cleansing of God’s forgiveness (v.22). Our sin, our guilt, and our condemnation are all washed away.
And now, having done everything necessary on the Cross to make it possible for us, Jesus Himself has issued our invitation to draw near to God and He stands ready to usher us into the throneroom of God’s personal presence (v.21). How could we possibly ignore this invitation?
Right now, let us take up the invitation, bow down in prayer, take the hand of Jesus and approach God’s throne of grace to find mercy in every time of need. Let’s bring ourselves to Him in love. Let’s bring our needs to Him in confident faith. Draw near to God.
