Psalm 109

Psalm 109

LORD, my Saviour and Defender –
When I have been cruelly attacked
and mercilessly lied against;
When the very ones I have loved
and for whom I have prayed
have repaid me with evil hatred and opposition:
May my prayer for justice come before You!
May I find favour in Your sight!

LORD, I am so tempted
to call down curses
on those who have so deeply wounded me!
I am ashamed to admit that, in all honesty,
the anger and hurt in my heart overwhelms me at times
and makes me wish the most horrifying fate on them
and even on their families
for generations to come.

LORD, at the very least,
my wounded heart longs for justice.
I long for the cursing and harm done to me
by their cruel persecution
to rebound onto their own heads.

But,
Sovereign and Eternal LORD,
God of Justice and Unfailing Love –
From my deep need and pain,
from my frailty and weakness,
from my heartbreak and sorrow,
Hear my simple cry,
‘Help me, LORD!’

O LORD, my God –
Help me in my weakness;
Save me in my distress;
Bless me in my poverty and deep need,
and restore to me
the joy of my salvation!

LORD, I will give You thanks and praise,
my Defender and Saviour, forever.
Amen.
