Psalm 119 is a Psalm in praise of God’s Word. It’s called an “acrostic Psalm”, because each section of the original Hebrew Psalm starts with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Here’s how it works: There are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet and Psalm 119 has 22 sections (of 8 verses each). Each section starts with the next letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Each line in that section also begins with the same letter. It is a work of poetic brilliance in the original language, designed in this particular way to help readers to memorise it. My prayer in praise of God’s Word (below) is a very faint shadow of Psalm 119. It’s my humble attempt to write a simple, 26-line acrostic prayer in praise of God’s Word, based on the content of Psalm 119. I hope it will bring you some blessing on a day when it will probably take you about 15 minutes to read the Psalm of the day from Scripture.
Awesome is Your Word, Lord
Blessed are those who hear!
…
Comfort comes to all who
Delight Your Law to praise.
Eternal is Your truth, Lord
Faithful are Your ways.
Grace abounds to those who
Honour Your commands.
Infinite, Your wisdom,
Just, are Your demands.
Knowledge of Your will gives
Light unto our feet.
Majestic are Your promises,
Never failing, sweet.
Open up our eyes to, Your
Perfect plans and ways.
Quieten our hearts, Lord,
Revive us all our days.
Save us from all danger,
Teach us truths of old.
Unfailing is Your Word, Lord,
Valuable as gold.
Wonderful its power to
X-ray soul and heart.
Yes, Lord, make me always
Zealous for each part.
